Background

Project Rationale

CinemaWorld aims to be a website where young audiences in major markets (Atlanta, for example) can see which theaters in their area are showing international films, as well as details on the films themselves (name, poster, synopsis, cast, runtime). This will enable film-curious individuals to seek out diverse perspectives, and encourage consumption of media that will hopefully expand their thinking and knowledge of the global landscape by showing them alternate viewpoints.

Literature Review

Recent research notions that more foreign language content is being viewed in English-speaking countries compared to pre-pandemic. Yeomans (2024) states that Korean shows like Squid Game and movies like Parasite have contributed to this. Younger viewers are the main source of growth, and consumption looks to keep growing in further years. Furthermore, more films are being produced worldwide (2023) compared to three years ago (2020), despite a global box office slump mostly caused by China’s slowing economy. Hancock et al. (2025) says India is the leader in film production overall, with three times as much output as the next closest country.
